Aldercar Infant and Nursery School

In Derbyshire all families are entitled to up to 570 hours per year of free 'early education' from the term following your child's third birthday. Our school offers early education places for 3 and 4 year olds, please contact us for more information.

We are an 'enhanced resource' school for deaf* children. Deaf children are given a place in our provision by the Local Education Authority, if it is included in the child's Education Health Care Plan.

− Deaf children are taught in mainstream classes and are supported by a team of specialist staff, who work closely with mainstream staff. The team consists of qualified and experienced Teachers of the Deaf, Specialist Teaching Assistants and a Deaf Tutor.

− Parents of deaf children are involved in their child's education.

− Deaf children are educated using their preferred mode of communication, be it spoken English (with or without Sign Supported English) or British Sign Language.

− Deaf children are taught in good listening and watching environments. The whole school community attend deaf awareness sessions.

− Deaf children have access to the full curriculum and lessons are differentiated to reflect the specific needs of each child.

− Deaf children spend most of their time learning in mainstream classes but are withdrawn for additional speech and language lessons. Deaf children may also be withdrawn for curriculum support. There is a base for deaf children to learn in good listening conditions.

− Deaf children learn about deafness through the deaf studies curriculum, taught during Deaf Club, which is delivered by the Deaf Tutor.

− The support team work closely with a wide range of other professionals that visit school.

*The term 'deaf' includes children with significant hearing loss.
