Early Years Special Educational Needs Service

The Early Years Special Educational Needs Service (EYSENS) provides county wide support for young children who have complex and long-term learning needs. The service works with children from birth until they go to school. With parental permission, anyone (including parents) can make a referral to the service.

While your child meets the service criteria, the EYSENS will regularly assess him or her and provide advice on strategies, approaches and targets. Regular reports on progress are provided and the service works closely with any other professionals involved with your child.

The service consists of:

The Derbyshire Portage Service (DPS) - Portage Home Visitors work with parents and children at home, supporting you to encourage your child's development by suggesting activities and resources to make learning fun.

The Early Years Special Educational Needs Teaching Service (EYSENTS) - Just before your child starts at an early years setting, your child's support will transfer from a Portage Home Visitor to a Specialist teacher who will support your child's learning in the setting. Children who have significant emerging developmental concerns may also be referred to the EYSENST. The teacher will maintain regular contact with you and may still carry out the occasional visit to home. When it is time for your child to start school, your child's Specialist teacher will support both you and your child through this process.

A Clinic Helpline via email

An EYSEN helpline is now available and welcomes enquires from any professionals or parents. Support via the helpline includes signposting to services and guidance on inclusive practice for children with SEND.

All members of the service have experience and expertise in working with children who need extra help and encouragement to learn.

Referrals to the Service are made via the Early Years SEN Panel. Support Services welcome referrals from professionals or parents.

The EYSENS is available for training to support practitioners, parents and children with SEND.

Schools should access the appropriate S4S page:

Early years providers and parents look at the Early Years Training directory:

Alternatively, please contact any member of the EYSEN team to discuss bespoke training.
