Early Years Special Educational Needs Support Service

The Early Years Special Educational Needs Support Service (EYSENS) works with children who have complex and long-term needs, both with birth diagnosis and emerging developmental concerns.

The Early Years Special Educational Needs Support Service (EYSENS) is comprised of the following.

The Derbyshire Portage Service

Portage home visitors work with children 0 to 5 years old before they attend early years settings or move into specialist provision.

Specialist teachers

Specialist teachers support children in non-maintained early years settings giving advice and providing training.

We welcome enquires from any professional or parents. Support includes signposting to services and guidance on inclusive practice for children with SEND, email:

Referrals to the service are made via the Early Years SEN Panel. Support services welcome referrals from professionals or parents.


The EYSENS is available for training to support settings, parents and children with SEND.

Schools should access the information via the training section of the S4S website.

Early years providers can find training courses for staff or volunteers working with children and young people or please contact any member of the EYSEN team to discuss bespoke training.
