What is an education, health and care (EHC) plan?

The Education, Health and Care plan (EHC Plan) is way of assessing and planning services for children and young people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities − from birth up to the age of 25.
The EHC plan replaces the Statement of SEN and Learning Difficulty Assessment for young people leaving school (if you or your child already has a Statement or Learning Difficulty Assessment it will not change immediately to an EHC Plan but will change over the next two-three years.

The new assessment and planning process will put children, young people and families at the center of decision making.
The process is 'person-centered' and focuses on what is important for the child or young person − what they want to achieve now and in the future.

To do this it brings together a range of people who know and understand their needs and aims to provide greater choice and control.
