Information for Parents and Carers
If your child’s early years setting has concerns about your child’s development, they should first support any needs identified through their quality first provision, reasonable adjustments and adaptations, in discussion with you as your child’s first and most enduring educator. This is completed as part of the universal level of the graduated response to children’s education needs.
When this support is reviewed with you, it may be decided that your child would benefit from some more tailored support and/or specific interventions. At this point, your child moves to the targeted level of the graduated response. The setting is then required to keep a detailed record of their cycles of assess, plan, do and review. The My SEND Learning Programme provides a format to keep all the information together about your child’s needs, your wishes, the support provided and the impact it has on your child’s progress and development.
Your child’s My SEND Learning Programme (MSLP) includes:
- What is important to you and your child, including your goals and aspirations for the future.
- Your child’s strengths, special educational needs (SEN) and any health & social care needs which relate to SEN.
- the outcomes which will help your child to move towards their goals and aspirations.
- the support given to your child to help them to make progress towards their outcomes.
Section 2 of the MSLP needs to be completed by you as parents/carers so that your views and aspirations for your child are heard and recorded. You will also be asked to give consent as the MSLP will be shared with your child’s subsequent settings and schools as they move through education.
Information for settings and schools
Once a child moves to the targeted level of the graduated response you will need to keep a formal record of the support given through your cycles of assess, plan, do and review. The MSLP has been designed to provide a way of organising the information for a child with special education needs and/or disabilities to record what provision has been made for them and the impact that it has had on their progress and development.
There are 2 versions of the MSLP. You can use whichever you prefer.
- Original document: A single document to which you add information in each section, completing the forms as you move from one cycle of assess, plan, do and review, to the next.
- Folder system: A folder version which can be electronic or paper copy, in which the sections are used as sub folders to store documents, reports, assessments and other paperwork about the child and their SEND.
The Related Documents below link you to each version. Completed examples of each version are also available.
